As we enter the final days of 2022, we are pleased to step back and highlight the work performed by the Young and New Members Committee over the past year. We have loved working with our committee leaders and are truly grateful for their time and commitment to ABI.
Quarterly Newsletters
In 2022, the committee published newsletters in March and October featuring seven articles. Our March 2022 newsletter included articles comparing the methods for liquidating the assets of distressed companies and discussing developments arising from the Supreme Court’s holding in City of Chicago v. Fulton. Our October 2022 newsletter was incredibly timely; it featured an in-depth article on the ownership and valuation of cryptocurrency assets held in the custody of a cryptocurrency exchange. Also featured was an article by a career law clerk on her 21 years of working for the court system, an article on pleading “reasonable due diligence” in preference actions, and an article on the assignability of intellectual property licenses.
The Young and New Members Committee is looking for authors for our newsletter. Writing for our committee newsletter is a great way to get more involved with the committee and to publish with ABI. If you have any interest in writing for the newsletter, please reach out to our Newsletter Editors Jack O’Connor or CC Schnapp (their email addresses are below). The deadline to submit a topic for the next newsletter is Jan. 15, 2023, and articles are due Feb. 15, 2023.
ABI’s Annual Spring Meeting
At ABI’s Annual Spring Meeting (April 28-30, 2022), the committee partnered with the Unsecured Trade Creditors Committee to present a panel titled, “Reconsidering Value Allocation: Tools for Junior Stakeholders.” The panelists were Hon. Michelle M. Harner (U.S. Bankruptcy Court (D. Md.); Baltimore), Omar J. Alaniz (Reed Smith LLP; Dallas), Jeannie Kim (Sheppard Mullins; San Francisco), Susan Poll Klaessy (Foley & Lardner; Chicago) and James Millstein (Guggenheim Securities; New York).
ABI’s Winter Leadership Conference
Co-Education Directors Bodie Colwell and John Baxter planned the committee’s panel for ABI’s Winter Leadership Conference (Dec. 8-10, 2022). The committee partnered with the Real Estate Committee to present a panel titled, “1111(b) Wizardry.” The panelists included two Committee members: current Membership Relations Director (and 2022 “40 Under 40” honoree) Amber Carson (Gray Reed & McGraw LLP; Dallas) and our beloved former co-chair, Tara J. Schellhorn (Riker Danzig LLP; Morristown, N.J.). The panel also featured Hon. Daniel P. Collins (U.S. Bankruptcy Court (D. Ariz.); Phoenix) and Franklind D. Lea (Tactical Financial Consulting, LLC; Atlanta).
Happy Hour
On April 25, 2022, the committee hosted a virtual happy hour for young and new ABI members to get to know each other before the Annual Spring Meeting. Past attendees of the ASM shared stories from previous conferences, answered questions from first-time conference goers and provided networking tips.
Looking Ahead to 2023
Over the course of the coming year, we will continue to identify ways for our committee members to get involved. Newsletter articles are a great way to become active, so please contact our newsletter co-editors, CC Schnapps and Jack O’Connor, with your ideas and submissions. We also invite you to share with us any other questions or thoughts that you may have regarding the Young and New Members Committee or ABI in general.
We look forward to meeting and working with more of you in the future!
