Practice Focus: Chapter 11 debtor representation, unsecured creditor committees, adversary proceeding litigation

Q: What brought you to join the EI&T Committee?

There is no doubt that Emerging Industries and Tech is a sector that touches every part of the legal practice and every part of our clients’ operations. Attorneys who once thought different pieces of technology would fizzle out are now finding themselves behind the eight ball. I wanted to join a committee that would give me access to great tips on how technology can help my practice, but also articles on how courts are grappling with new aspects of technology, like Bitcoin. It’s those issues that are not only a first impression for our courts, but first impressions for us as attorneys in our conference rooms with clients dealing with the same new, unique questions.

Q: What “emerging industry” are you excited about?

Telecommuting tech — i.e., Zoom and Microsoft Teams. I have Zoom fatigue along with everyone else, but this technology has really given us the opportunity to make things more efficient and cost-effective for our clients. My preference is always to be “in person,” but one cannot deny the time and cost savings of being able to appear at a short meeting or brief hearing via Zoom.

Q: Blockchain: changing the world, or tech-fad?

Changing the world for sure.

Q: What tech or industry trend in the bankruptcy space do you hope continues? Anything you want to see fade away?

Hybrid in-person and Zoom-optional conferences. I find it fascinating that you can go to a conference now and one of the panelists will be on a screen, halfway around the world, and still engaging in the discussion in real time.

Also, it may sound like an old hat, but I’m still amazed that we are able to file pleadings online and pull the audio from any bankruptcy court hearing. It is truly the great divide between the bankruptcy court and the majority of local state court practice.

Q: Favorite ABI resource?

ABI’s Daily Headlines delivered to my inbox. I love how it summarizes headlines from around the world that are relevant to my practice area.

Q: Predict the future: In 20 years, bankruptcy lawyers will ...

Still be looking for extra drink tickets at ABI conferences.
