Melissa B. Jacoby studies and teaches bankruptcy at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is an elected member of the American Law Institute, the National Bankruptcy Conference, and the American College of Bankruptcy. Her activities before joining the legal academy include clerking for the Honorable Robert E. Ginsberg of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Honorable Marjorie O. Rendell of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and working as a staff attorney for the National Bankruptcy Review Commission. Jacoby closely followed the public portions of Detroit's chapter 9 in real time - listened to all the court hearings, monitored the docket, and discussed the legal issues with the local and national press and via social media.
