Alexandria, Va. — Prof. Michelle Harner, Professor of Law and the Director of the Business Law Program at the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law, will serve as the Robert M. Zinman ABI Resident Scholar for the Fall 2015 semester. Prof. Harner was the Reporter to the ABI Commission to Study the Reform of Chapter 11 and received ABI’s highest membership award, the Annual Service Award, for her work on the Commission. Helping to maintain ABI’s position as the authoritative source of bankruptcy information for Congress, the media and the public, she will serve in ABI’s Alexandria, Va., office through December.
An ABI member since 2003, Prof. Harner teaches courses in bankruptcy and creditors’ rights, business associations, business planning, corporate finance and the legal profession. She is widely published and lectures frequently on various topics involving corporate governance, financially distressed entities, risk management and related legal issues. Prof. Harner is a member of the Dodd-Frank Study Working Group for the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, and is an elected member of the American Law Institute and a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy. She previously was in private practice in the areas of business restructuring, insolvency, bankruptcy and related transactions, most recently as a partner at the Chicago office of the international law firm Jones Day. Prof. Harner received her B.A. in 1992 from Boston College and her J.D. from the Moritz College of Law at The Ohio State University in 1995.
