Passes Pension Bill Amid Democratic Complaints—Fee-based
service
The House Ways and
Means Committee adopted legislation yesterday overhauling the nation's
pension
laws, but Democrats complained that the panel was ceding too much
control over
the bill to the House Education and the Workforce Committee,
CongressDaily
reported yesterday. The legislation—with a $70.6 billion
price tag
over 10 years—closely tracks the bill the Education and the
Workforce
Committee adopted in June, which would tighten the rules governing how
companies
fund their pension plans. The Ways and Means version of the bill also
included
some provisions aimed at boosting workers' retirement
savings.

First-round Cuts Could Hit 315
Comair says that
315 pilots
and flight attendants could be laid off in the first wave of cuts as
the regional
airline tries to restructure under bankruptcy, the Associated Press
reported
today. Most of the pilots and flight attendants are based at the
Cincinnati-Northern
Kentucky International Airport. In a notice required by Kentucky state
law,
Comair said on Monday that the layoffs would take place on Jan. 2 and
could
include up to 150 pilots and 165 flight attendants. Comair's corporate
parent,
Delta Air Lines, also has begun warning workers of potential layoffs
from its
local operation as it too restructures under bankruptcy. The job cuts
are part
of Delta's efforts to shrink its hub in Cincinnati, including a 26
percent cut
in the flight schedule on Dec. 2. Comair could drop another 650 jobs
as it tries
to cut $70 million from its annual costs.
